Succeed at Your Resolution: Start Today!

29 Dec

We are just days away from a new year and with that comes resolutions to lose weight and work out. The gyms get unbelievably crowded for the first 3 weeks of January and then fizzle out to their normal level. Don’t be one of the “Resolution People” who give up 3 weeks in. Be in the minority of people who are successful.

My tip? Start today. Don’t wait for New Years. Don’t binge and go nuts all weekend and then suddenly start starving yourself on Sunday. Start today by making small changes. Don’t look at it as a new year’s resolution. Just start making lifestyle changes and you will succeed. Every time I started on new year’s and kept it as a new year’s resolution, I failed. Something psychological about the date, I suppose.

Today: write down everything you eat and record your calories. Go for a 2o minute walk today. Tomorrow: Write down your food again, but cut 500 calories from what you ate the previous day. Make sure you’re eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 snacks in between. Don’t go more than 3 – 4 hours without eating. Add a small salad to your dinner. It’ll fill you up with great veggies so you’ll eat less. Eat half of the ice cream you’d normally eat. Make small, simple changes that don’t leave you feeling deprived but will produce results over time.

Get active. You don’t even have to go to a gym right away, though most gyms offer great prices and specials for January you may want to take advantage of. Start walking every day. Park further away at the mall or grocery store so you walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. You can start small and work your way up.

Don’t focus on a number or on a calendar date. Change your life and start it TODAY.
